University of Baguio (UB) moved closer to its goal of global academic integration as the School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (SIHTM) hosted the Academic Visit for the Taiwan-Philippines Higher Education Collaboration on April 7, 2026, at Cafe Fernando.
The gathering served as a productive dialogue between UB and a visiting delegation composed of officials from the Taiwan Education Center, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), and National Chi Nan University (NCNU). The visit aimed to bridge the gap between the two nations through guest lectures, research sharing, and the exploration of faculty and student mobility programs.
In her welcome address, SIHTM Dean Jenelyn Mangangey-Magpatoc described the event as more than just a formal meeting, but a good avenue to “share ideas and aspirations.” She emphasized that the visit marks the beginning of a partnership where both institutions can adopt one another’s best practices, ultimately fostering a “lasting friendship” between the schools.
The sentiment was echoed by Dr. Donnavila Marie B. Panday-Herbster, Director of Research Innovation Extension and Community Outreach (RIECO). She noted that because both UB and the Taiwanese institutions prioritize internationalization, the collaboration is a natural fit. “Both have a shared ground and endeavor,” she stated, referring to their mutual commitment to community-focused research and innovation.
Representing the visitors, Ms. Jennifer Yeh, General Manager of the Taiwan Education Center, commended UB for the “incredible achievements” of its SIHTM students and thanked the university for its warm hospitality. Joining her from National Sun Yat-sen University were Dr. Chia-Hao Hsu, Dr. Yu-Ching Huang, and Dr. Tijuku Rujigajig, along with a delegation from the International Indigenous Interdisciplinary Program and the Master of Indigenous Studies in Sociology. Representing National Chi Nan University were Dr. Yu-Chih Huang and Ms. Patricia Xie.
A highlight of the visit was a lecture by Dr. Yu-Chih Huang, Chair and Professor of the Department of Tourism, Leisure, and Hospitality Management at NCNU. Drawing parallels between the highland landscapes of Baguio City and Nantou, Taiwan, Dr. Huang discussed “University-Industry Collaboration Engagement.” His talk explored the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) in tourism, the link between travel and human well-being, and the necessity of career adaptability in a shifting global market.
Following his lecture, Dr. Huang extended an invitation to UB students to pursue their graduate degrees and research projects in Taiwan.
The event concluded with a cultural showcase, as student delegates from National Sun Yat-sen University performed traditional chants and songs. The performance served as a tribute to indigenous interdisciplinary practices, underscoring the deep cultural heritage shared by both regions.

SDG Alignment
This collaboration directly supports SDG 4: Quality Education by facilitating international research sharing and providing students with pathways to global graduate programs. By integrating diverse academic perspectives, both institutions enhance the quality and reach of their curricula.
The focus on industry-university engagement and technological resilience in tourism aligns with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Dr. Huang’s insights on career adaptability ensure that students graduate with the skills necessary to drive sustainable growth in a modern, tech-driven economy.
The inclusion of indigenous studies and cultural performances promotes SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. By centering indigenous knowledge within a high-level academic dialogue, the partnership ensures that traditional heritage is respected and integrated into global education.
Finally, the event embodies SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. By fostering cross-border cooperation and sharing institutional resources, UB and its Taiwanese partners are creating a sustainable framework for international academic excellence.
